Chlorinated rubber refers to the chlorinated product of natural rubber. A mixture of trichloride and tetrachloride with a chlorine content of 65%. Chlorinated rubber has good compatibility with alkyd resins with similar linearity and low polarity. Generally, alkyd resins containing more than 54% fatty acids have better compatibility with chlorinated rubber in aromatic hydrocarbon diluents. Chlorinated rubber is rarely used in extruded or molded products.
It is mainly usage is based on the different models with the different molecular mass or viscosity. It is suitable for inks, coatings and adhesives, etc. Generally speaking, low viscosity (0.01Pa•s ) Chlorinated rubber are mainly used as ink additives; medium viscosity (0.01～0.03Pa•s) chlorinated rubber are mainly used to be coatings; high viscosity (0.1t～0.3Pa•s) chlorinated rubber are mainly used to make adhesives, mostly,the medium viscosity chlorinated rubber for coatings will be used more. The main application areas in coatings are road marking paint, marine paint, container paint, architectural paint, swimming pool paint, flame retardant paint, etc.
Road marking paint, is a kind of special application field of chlorinated rubber. Coatings based on chlorinated rubber are abrasion-resistant, fast-drying, and attract attention on concrete and asphalt pavements. They have excellent adhesion properties and can withstand the effects of chemicals and abrasives used in snowy weather and thin ice on the ground. In the UK, it has been stipulated that chlorinated rubber must be used to mark airports.
In addition, due to the high chlorine content, chlorinated rubber will be not burning. Therefore, it is a valuable raw material for making fire-proof and anti-corrosion paint. This paint has been widely used in petroleum refining plants. Chlorinated rubber is basically not used as an independent film-forming agent, but as a modified additive. As the cohesive force of the neoprene adhesive film is significantly improved, the bonding performance is enhanced. The adhesion to hard PVC is nearly 10 times higher than that of unmodified neoprene adhesive.
